May 2 2012 Brooklyn Shakedown: Del & Dexter Lawrence

It’s times like this where we celebrate coming together – sharing a vibe and a groove and making the absolute best of any given night. Well, this night is Wednesday…and these two fine souls are about to drop it on ya.

It’s not easy putting DEL into words. Firstly, we believe he encompasses all that is true and good and real about djs and dance music. As a staff reviewer for 5 Magazine and co-conspirator of the mighty-excellent Do Wanna Boogie? parties, it’s obvious others hold him in high regard as well.

But, the complete fullness of DEL is experienced in person. His sets are informative, inspirational, and downright FUN. We could say more about him here, but it’s truly better to come see him tear it up.

Friend of the Brooklyn Shakedown, Dexter Lawrence is no stranger to soul music. He’s been holding down and building up to Saturday nights (the Soul Sessions to be exact) at Cafe Noir in SoHo for over a year now. Saturday’s top billing for a Manhattan residency and Cafe Noir (Brooklynites might like to know they run the always tasty Bar Tabac as well) has seen the likes of Liondub, Sid Vaga, Patafunk, and Wiseacre fill the halls with beautiful music, too.

Great company.

It’s May friends…we’re sprouting freshness over here. SOUL is the safeword.

See you on the dancefloor.

Record Shopping With Nutritious

Join Nutritious on a visit to one of his all-time favorite underground record shops.

April 25 2012 Brooklyn Shakedown: Nutritious & Wiseacre (Wiseacre Birthday Celebration)

Wiseacre

DJ Wiseacre runs three very successful LA parties, Funky In The Middle, Custom Sundaze, and now, theLIFT. Just around the bend from Brooklyn, you may find him rockin along residencies deep underground at the flavor filled Sweet N Low parties and his Found Love NYC. Wiseacre’s messed with some of the best: Gilles Peterson, Danny Krivit, Nickodemus, Louie Vega, Joe Clausell, Osunlade, Black Coffee, Mark Farina, Rich Medina, Spinna, dj Garth, Sabo, Vadim, Mark de Clive Lowe, and also Jeremy Sole.

While the Wiseacre’s living a bi-coastal existence between LA and NYC, his LIFT party thrives out West and his soon to be restaurant/club Louie and Chan is getting its legs in Lower East Side of New York City. Wiseacre’s a top dj…He selects super fine tunes from the most danceable of genres …from Brooklyn grooves to Balkan beats, South American samba to Sweden’s indie dance, he blends the house, the funk, the disco, the afro-latin, the broken-beat, and the dub …and he’s one of our faves.

Nutritious

High Times called Nutritious “A Musical Healer” URB Magazine boasted, “Nutritious is holding it down in NYC proper”, 1200 Dreams hailed him as “One of the most appetizing DJs on the scene”, and the Sample UK recently reiterated, “An integral part in the growth of soulful music worldwide…he really is one of the most interesting and exciting DJs at the moment.”Globally, Nutritious is favored by the World’s most select purveyors; booked to appear at The Whitney Museum of American Art, Ultra Music Festival, Winter Music Conference, Nateva, Jam Cruise, Cielo, Mighty, and share the spotlight with Femi Kuti, Mark Farina, J Boogie, and DJ Logic. In addition to impressive performances, add a residency at the Ace Hotel New York and a truly pioneering stint in Latin America by bringing electronic dance music to Nicaragua; second only to USA’s Charles Feelgood and preceding the Netherlands’s often #1 globally ranked dj, Tiesto. His weekly radio show Gratitude garners loyal music loving supporters from around the world, while his SpinSpinNYC & Brooklyn Shakedown parties receive critical and international acclaim; featuring guest stars like Pete Dafeet, JT Donaldson, Djoon Paris’ Reverend P, Editorial Record’s Dave Allison, Dubtribe Soundsystem’s own Sunshine Jones, Africa’s Clive Bean, and the Shakedown originators Rob Paine & Willyum.

A man of many tastes and styles, one thing is certain, Nutritious’s sets are always inventive and full of flavor.

Hailing from the city of soul, Philadelphia, Clayton and Fulcrum have been making funky and soulful music since 2002. Not limiting themselves to any particular genre or tempo, they run the gamut of styles, rhythms, and vibes in search of musical fulfillment. They are influenced by the warm sounds of Funk, Soul, Jazz, Latin, Jamaican, Brazilian, African, and marry it with electronic music production.

They have released 2 albums under their imprint Natural Selection with their third currently in production. Originals and remixes have been featured on Om Records, Fort Knox, Funk Weapons, Dae, and Imperial Dub.

Clayton and Fulcrum have established a reputation for creative live and DJ sets in Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington D.C. and opened for De La Soul, Massive Attack, and DJ Krush.

April 11 2012 Brooklyn Shakedown: Hannah Gibbs // My House Your House | The World Bar | Musicology | Sydney, Australia

Hannah is not your stereotypical female DJ. Dubbed Sydney’s Queen of House, Hannah is a true talent on the decks. Her energetic and aggressive mixing style coupled with her excellent selection has earned her long-term residencies at some of Sydney’s best bars and clubs: World Bar, Wharf Bar, The Gold, Home Nightclub, Zeta Bar, Ladylux, the New Brighton, the Lincoln, and Empire. Her passion and interpretation of underground, deep to deep-Chicago style house has earned her huge respect from some of the industry’s elite, here and abroad.

“I’ve shared the DJ booth many times with Hannah and I can personally recommend her! Hannah has great technical and musical skills paired with bags of energy and personality that shines over the dancefloor.” – Da Sunlounge (Myna Music, UK)

With her own sound, style and a burning desire to explore the diversity of downtempo, funk, and hip-hop to deep and energetic dance music, Hannah makes sure her audience is in for a good night on the dance floor when she is working the decks. And, of course, there’s that smile that everyone loves – from Sydney to New York.

Hannah will be joined by NUTRITIOUS & DJ DAVID KISS
