Monthly Archives: June 2011

July is upon us and Nutritious & Wilder have a very exciting lineup of special guest djs for this month’s Brooklyn Shakedown parties.

July 6th: Wiseacre

DJ Wiseacre runs three very successful LA parties, Funky In The Middle, Custom Sundaze, and now, theLIFT. Just around the bend from Brooklyn, you may find him rockin residencies at the Ace Hotel and deep underground at the flavor filled Sweet N Low parties and his Found Love NYC. Wiseacre’s messed with some of the best: Danny Krivit, Nickodemus, Louie Vega, Joe Clausell, Osunlade, Black Coffee, Mark Farina, Rich Medina, Spinna, dj Garth, Sabo, Vadim, Mark de Clive Lowe, and also Jeremy Sole. While the Wiseacre’s living a bi-coastal existence between LA and NYC, his LIFT party thrives out West and his soon to be restaurant/club Louie and Chan is getting its legs in Lower East Side of New York City. Wiseacre’s a top dj…He selects super fine tunes from the most danceable of genres …from Brooklyn grooves to Balkan beats, South American Samba to Sweden’s indie dance, he blends the house, the funk, the disco, the afro-latin, the broken-beat, and the dub …and he’s one of our faves.

July 13th: Pete Dafeet & Sunshine Jones

What can we really say about a free party with the UK’s Pete Dafeet (founder of the acclaimed deep house record label Lost My Dog) and San Francisco’s Sunshine Jones of Dubtribe stardom coming together on the same night in Williamsburg? Pinch me.

July 20th: Davidson Ospina

Davidson Ospina runs the record label Ospina Digital and also co-heads Open Bar Music alongside NYC’s Oscar P. Ospina’s resume as a producer, remixer, and keyboard session player includes Dimitri From Paris, Grandmaster Flash, Beyonce, Sebastian Fiebak, Jake Childs, Jocelyn Brown, King Britt’s Sylk 130, Arnold Jarvis and many more. As a producer, his hits include the #1 Billboard chart-topping remix of Christina Aguilera’s “Ain’t No Other Man” as well as reconstructions for Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. The biggest DJs in the world -from Roger Sanchez to Frankie Knuckles- are playing his mixes. And, on this 20th night of July, we’ve got him rocking the decks DJ style, because he’s World class at that, too.

July 27th: Dave Allison

If you’ve been diggin the bins for today’s finest underground house music, you’ve surely come to know the fascinating sounds of Dave’s Kinjo and Editorial record labels. Just ask devout fans of the buzzin Stompy and Traxsource digital download stores and other boutique retailers around the globe. Dave’s recently signed the Corduroy Mavericks, JT Donaldson, Kinky Movement, Joshua Heath, Husky / Random Soul, Neighbour, The House Inspectors, Hector Moralez, Vernon & Dacosta, Combined, and others. C’mon now, that’s like the Who’s Who of the funkiest new school of house. Turns out, his new Editorial label is also jam packed; releasing tasty new takes on classic funk and disco cuts admired by djs and dancers everywhere. Dave’s also done the rounds on DJ duties with the likes of Carter, Farina, Heather, Soul Clap, and more – his dues are paid, and you bet they were mad funky. It’s our complete honor to welcome this Montreal native to the Brooklyn Shakedown.

The Brooklyn Shakedown is held weekly – always free, every Wednesday night. Join us in July.

It’s been an amazing month of June at the Brooklyn Shakedown. Nutritious & Wilder’s SpinSpinNYC 3 Year Anniversary Celebration continues with maestro Aaron Dae.
Aaron’s in this – His versatility as a DJ, promoter and label owner have kept him at the forefront of underground house music since 1994. On the decks, he crafts deep, soulful, funky, spacey sets that take audiences on an aural journey. As a label owner and A&R director, Aaron embraces tracks steeped in the classic 90s house vein as well as grooves of the cosmic disco sort. In whichever realm he works, the Brooklyn-bred artist intertwines a soulful commonality into his electronic sound. Its house music understood on all levels.

Aaron began his career in the heyday of the 90’s NYC rave & club scene and spent his formative years promoting famed New York Clubs Tunnel, Twilo, Vinyl and Limelight. Eventually, he relocated to Philadelphia, where he began regularly DJing & producing events at local and regional clubs. Throughout his time in Philadelphia, Aaron laid the proverbial house music soundtrack to weekly crowds and eventually came to co-create the SunDae brand alongside Lee Jones & DJ Dirty. SunDae, one of Philly’s longest running, ongoing, and prolific house event brands, has become a “must play” stop for artists such as Hector Romero, Andy Caldwell, and JoJo Flores as well as hometown heroes like Josh Wink, Questlove of the Legendary Roots crew, King Britt, and Rich Medina.

In early 2004, Aaron translated the success of his promotional career into the launch of a new music label, Dae Recordings. Unlike his own, self-branded style of “soulful funk,” Aaron signed on house tracks rooted deeper in uptempo grooves. “It’s gotta be funky,” he said on signing tracks for his Dae imprint. After a twenty release stint featuring house heavyweights like Derrick Carter, Onionz, Johnny Fiasco, Greenskeepers, Julius Papp, Manuel Tur, Miles Maeda, and Schmoov!, Dae still continues to garner massive support from industry tastemakers worldwide.

In 2005, Aaron deepened his own music career by relocating to Chicago. Producing and performing in the House music epicenter pushed both Aaron and Dae Recordings further into the forefront of the music scene, sharing the stage with Chicago classics like Mark Farina, Derrick L. Carter, Glenn Underground, Mark Grant, Terry Hunter, Ron Carroll, and Diz. In addition to dropping his spacey, soulful sound on audiences, he continues promoting events across the country. At Miami’s annual Winter Music Conference, Aaron successfully hosted “Floatin’” for two consecutive years. The sold-out luxury yacht vessel carried 300-plus party-goers and featured three separate rooms of live DJs. His current outdoor daytime events at WMC and the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Afternoon Delight, Do You Wanna Boogie?, and Now In Stereo, have been rated by Mixmag in the top 5 daytime parties (alongside massives like Ultra) and are considered to be some of the year’s most anticipated events. From Lovebirds, Vincenzo, and Crazy P to Marques Wyatt, Jamie Lewis, and Dj Spinna, Aaron has continued to push the creative envelope within his events.

While Aaron draws influences from the classic likes of Masters At Work, Todd Terry and Joey Negro, he also infuses elements of electronic soul. Artists such as Ron Basejam, Spirit Catcher, Hot Toddy and Lovebirds have all defined an aspect of his playing style. The result is a deep house blend of disco, funk, soul and space. “My live sets are about the journey,” he said. “I like to take people on a trip into the future past.”

In 2010, Aaron has relocated back to NYC and focused his attentions towards a slew of new event productions as well as launching the new Razor –N- Tape edits label. You can also catch Aaron at the local events he co-produces: Galaktik (Brooklyn) & Just For Kicks (Manhattan) as well as every week alongside his co-host, Tortured Soul’s own, JKriv on Tune in to their Electric Avenue radio show for the finest in Disco, Boogie, House, and all things groovy!

We’re looking forward to bringing you Danny Nunez for his limited NYC offering.

Admired by the likes of Roger Sanchez and Dennis Ferrer, it’s no surprise Danny was recently signed by Defected Records to shore up their presence in South East Asia. Impressive, coming from someone who just recently turned 21. You can expect big things from this young maestro; and we do, too.

Danny grew up in NYC where this music grows and some say it even came to be. From NY, he took his passion with him across Latin America constantly pushing the beat farther and farther into his own style. Eventually, he found himself back in his native Dominican Republic where he could settle down and focus a bit more on what it was to DJ to the masses. From there, the reach of his sounds and style exploded, and he’s been rocking crowds around the globe ever since.

Now, Danny comes full-circle, back home to New York where his roots run deep and can not be denied. We’re excited to have him with us at the BK Shakedown, and you know it’s gonna be a great night.

Join us as we continue SpinSpinNYC’s 3 year anniversary celebration… and even more importantly, we celebrate the party. Let’s party.

The heat is rising and the A/C’s flowing as we continue SpinSpinNYC’s 3 year anniversary celebration. This next Wednesday night, we warmly welcome the wonderful reggae/dub influenced, Afrobeat/funk enthused SELECTRESS IRIELA to the party.

Selectress Iriela got her start on drive time reggae music program, “Rockers” on 88.9FM WERS Boston in 1996 and is now resident DJ of the Global Groove Sunday summer series at Miss Favela BK and host of the Second World Sessions radio show on BreakThru Radio recorded in New York City. Iriela originally established herself through her in depth interviews and on-air style as one of the first female disc jockeys and producers on the scene. Ms. La’s vibe has evolved to encompass Afrobeat, funk to electro disco and more – honoring anthems for revolution infusing the rhythmic sounds of tribal house to move the body and soul.

Selectress Iriela (AKA Valerie K. Parker) spins on behalf of her global mission with her edutainment group, Second World (, which itself was inspired from her love of music and her field research in sustainable international development in Jamaica. The mission: to bridge the gap between the so-called “First” and “Third” world, through the power of media production, musical events and fairly traded art empowerment to uplift the poorest of the poor and edu-tain all. She is the founder / producer of the interactive media and music festival – Culture Fest International ethical global events.

Her first feature film work in progress, “Reggae Revolution” features interviews with a who’s who of the genre including everyone from Sly and Robbie, Mad Professor to Mutabaruka.

Having opened for legends such as the Wailers, Burning Spear, and Bunny Wailer, as well as contemporary artists like Luciano and Sizzla, Iriela has worn the hat of producer and on-air personality creating the Universal Vibration events, and more recently Second World Sessions, and Global Grooves series featuring global house sounds. She has rocked airwaves of IRIE FM in Kingston Jamaica to outdoor dancehalls in the hills of Maroon rebel settlement Accompong to spots like The Roxy in Boston, Nell’s, CBGBs and Cafe Noir in NYC and as an original member of Boston’s groundbreaking Toneburst Collective. Iriela thrives on constantly breaking down barriers.

Iriela is the host and producer of SECOND WORLD Sessions on BreakThru Radio recorded in New York City. She is slated to go into the studio this Summer to begin production on her first releases after more than fifteen years in the industry.

Join us as we welcome IRIELA to the Bembe this Wednesday and celebrate in style. We’ve got tons of free and fun goods to give away and look forward to enjoying the times together.
